In the article the author, Bill Bryson, describes growing up in Des Moines, Iowa during the 1950s. According to Bryson, during his childhood there were children everywhere, in densities now unimaginable. Bryson describes his childhood as unsupervised, unregulated, and robustly physical. One afternoon while playing football with neighborhood children Bryson hit his head on a stone retaining wall and began to bleed profusely. The family doctor waited until after he finished watching a golf tournament before he came to check on Bryson.
